Invisible material/cloak, Calcite optical crystal

Professor Baile Zhang from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore has recently proved that invisibility cloak will soon become a reality.
He has conducted an experiment at the Technology, Education and Design (TED) conference in Los Angeles using a small box made of calcite optical crystal (carbonate mineral) to bend light around an object, making anything placed behind the box appear invisible to people watching the demonstration.
Professor Zhang hopes this work will demonstrate that simple tools can sometimes perform important functions that previously required complicated methods. The research is still in its early stages, and his team is currently developing the invention, in order to make larger and more useful prototypes of the invisibility cloak. The scientist is sure that the substance could also help to improve optical fibres, such as that cables used for broadband internet, or create better “imaging” products such as digital cameras. This technology might have a wide range of military applications, e.g. a war-plane cloaked with such materials could achieve “super-stealth” status by becoming invisible in all directions to radar microwaves.
