Concrete Canvas (CC) is a fl exible cement impregnated fabric that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable waterproof and fire proof concrete layer. Essentially, it‘s concrete on a roll, all you have to do is add water. CC is supplied in rolls, 1.0 and 1.1m wide and in lengths up to 200sqm and it is available in 3 different thicknesses, 5mm, 8mm and 13mm. This new material is a low mass, low carbon technology which uses up to 95% less material than conventional concrete for many applications. It has minimal impact on the local ecology due to its limited alkaline reserve and very low wash rate. CC is chemically resistant, has good weathering performance and will not degrade in UV. According to the researcher, the material has an expected life of over 50 years. Concrete Canvas (CC) is the only way of laying a thin concrete layer from a prefabricated roll of material. This enables up to 150mm of poured concrete to be replaced with just 8mm for many surfacing applications. As a result, material saving of 95% can be achieved for a typical construction project. This directly reduces the CO2 footprint of construction work not only through material savings but also through reduced road transport and time on site. Untreated CC will naturally ‘green’ over time as the textured top surface allows moss growth, whilst the fi bre-reinforced concrete layer will prevent root-growing vegetation, which would otherwise restrict water flow and increase maintenance costs. Nowdays, Concrete Canvas has different applictaions in the civic and military sector. It can be used for slope protection, ditch lining, water management and military shelters but the material and its specifi c characteristics might also be interesting for architectural applications in close proximity to cities.
