“‘Mediated Reality‘ refers to the artificial modification of human perception by way of devices used to deliberately enhance or alter our senses“ – Ling Tan

Ling Tan has created a wearable body apparatus aiming towards identifing extended periods of rest and low levels of brain activity through the use of muscel movement sensors, and brainwave activity monitors. The results from the signals will either do nothing, or stimulate the brain and body through vibrations, intense heat, unpleasant sounds, or electric shock. As soon as concentration levels or movements increase, the stimulator will cease to work.

The devices are connected to micro-controllers which are connected to a rechargeable battery on the device, meaning it is portable and meant to be used on a daily basis. It works to allow the user to change their perception of the world and how the behave on a daily basis. It encourages mental and physical activity and growth.

Through wearing the device herself, Ling Tan had noticed a change in her behavior that was forced in order to avoid the repercussions of low activity. This adaptations makes her think if she or the device is in control of her activities, but regardless, it is used as a motivator..
