Banana Bioplastic

Sixteen year old Elif Bilgin discovered the starches and cellulose contained in the outer layer of banana peels has the potential to create materials that do a multitude of things ranging from insulating wires to forming medical protheses.  She was able to develope a chemical process that turns the peels into a non-decaying bioplastic.  She hopes this will be able to replace the need for petroleum and combat pollution.  The ideal is to substitute the banana peel bioplastic for commonly used petroleum-based plastics.

The bioplastics area good alternative for common plastics because they are made from biowaste and can decompose with no pollution.
